1960s Eric Tufnell Battleship Yamato Naval Battle Watercolor With Provenance
An original British marine watercolor depicting Operation Ten-Go with its surviving Parker Gallery commission archive.
Description
An original 1963 naval watercolor by Commander Eric Erskine Campbell Tufnell (1888–1978), depicting the Imperial Japanese battleship *Yamato* during her final sortie on April 7, 1945.
The battleship dominates an action-filled composition of attacking aircraft, smoke, fire and towering columns of water.
Signed “E. TUFNELL” lower right and inscribed with the *Yamato* subject and date lower left.
A particularly compelling feature is the surviving documentary provenance.
The work was commissioned for Mr Banks of Tadley, Hampshire through The Parker Gallery, Albemarle Street, London. Original correspondence and invoice dating from August–October 1963 remain with the painting and relate directly to its commission.
