Stucco head of a Bodhisattva, Gandhara, 3rd - 5th century AD. Mounted on a custom made brass base.
12 inches high ( head alone 8.2 in ) 5.5 wide 5 deep
Provanance: Ex Sotheby's, old tag on bottom of base.
The Bodhisattva with heavy-lidded almond eyes articulated by broad arching eyebrows, a serene expression on his face. He wears an elaborate pleated turban wrapped around his head.
Gandhara was an ancient Indo-Aryan civilization centered in present-day north-west Pakistan and north-east Afghanistan.The region was a central location for the spread of Buddhism to Central Asia and East Asia with many Chinese Buddhist pilgrims visiting the region.
