A prized collectible, Observations is Richard Avedon's first book, a collaboration with Truman Capote and Alexey Brodovich, the legendary art director who designed the book and who first hired the 22 year old photographer in 1945 as the youngest member of his team at Harper's Bazaar. The book is a collection of his best portrait photographs from 1946 thru 1959 with running commentary by Truman Capote. It was printed in Lucerne, Switzerland using the traditional photogravure method and reproduces Avedon's startlingly fresh, bold and energetic images which leap off the page with great fidelity. The book was seen as the epitome of sophisticated elegance when it was first released in 1959 and is now widely regarded as one of the seminal photo-books of the post war period. See less
