These benches became quite popular during the earliest part of the 20th century as vanity or window benches depending on where the piece was placed within the home. Vanity benches typically are used to accompany a dresser with an oversized mirror, commonly referred to as a vanity, which were standard in many American homes leading up to the Great Depression. Window benches are used as one might assume to be adorned near or beneath a window system as the small stature of each bench does not impede the view or space surrounding a window. While many of these benches were produced, a century later they have become quite rare and desirable among collectors of antiques and interior decorators. As far as the remaining examples are concerned, most are designed with floral elements or generic patterns typical of commonly found ironworks from a century ago. The example we now proudly offer is among the finest, most interesting, and rarest art deco benches which we have ever brought to market.

The most interesting feature of this bench would understandably be the stylized griffins found on either side. The casting detail of each griffin is masterfully worked bringing a lifelike quality to the forefront of the design. The griffins have an articulation and degree of sophistication which is uncommon even among the finest works that feature these elements. A polychrome paint decoration brings an additional layer of complexity and intrigue to these already fascinating creatures. The paint has aged as to be expected however has remained more vibrant on the inside faces of the bench that become visible when the piece is flipped over. The casted iron work is of the highest quality particularly the spiral twisted stretcher and lion paw feet that enhance the overall design. The bench was recently recovered on the seat and arms to either end in a neutral pattern. There are two old repairs to the frame which were brazed and restored properly as to have no impediment on the regular use of the bench. This is quite common on larger pieces of cast iron and is also a factor as to how these benches have become so rare to begin with. The bench is quite sturdy and will make a perfect addition to any interior as the best design option that can be reasonably sourced with respect to today's market. It is our privilege to have ownership over this exquisite bench and we have no doubt an educated collector will make a home for it where it will be safeguarded for many years to come. The bench measures 25” wide x 12” deep x 23” tall at the arms with an 18 1/2 seat height. See less
