An original oil painting on wooden panel by Percy Robert Craft, British artist 1856-1934, "A Little Bit of France" a sketch for the studio painting, scene of two women washing clothes in the river, French buildings going up the hillside, a pathway in the center of the painting, unsigned, 13" x 9 5/8". CA number 3967, CA purchased winter 2025 from a London auction house.
This painting was executed prior to 1934, possibly during the period 1910-1930. Documentation indicates it was sold from his studio by his son in April 1935. In 1937 it was framed by James Bourlet & Son for a Mrs. Dorothy Grey. (That frame was subsequently damaged beyond repair.)
This painting has been surface cleaned and varnished with archival picture varnish to preserve the paint film.
Craft was a figure, landscape and coastal painter in oil colors. He art education was at Heatherley's and the Slade School where he was a gold and silver medalist. He had several addresses in London and in Cornwall.
He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.
He exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham; the Ballie Gallery; Dowdeswell Galleries; the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; the Manchester City Art Gallery; the New Gallery; the Royal Academy; the Royal Society of British Artists; the Royal Cambrian Academy; the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers; the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Scottish Academy.
