The Girl with Jugs is said to be Klee's earliest extant painting. Before this, in 1909, he had done a small, realistic oil painting of a girl in a field, but this has been lost. In 1910 Klee had given up doing pictures on glass, but he retained his interest in "tonal" water colours, water colours in monochrome or black-and-white.
In his diary he wrote on his thirtieth birthday: "From now on I must be myself; realistic appraisals and no artificial onward-and-upward-with-the-arts!"
