This extraordinary and massive vintage Chiwara (antelope) sculpture has been impeccably carved from a single piece of wood. Historically, the Bambara people of Mali used this piece in initiation rituals associated with their agricultural society. Dimensions: 57"W x 20"H x 11"D.
In Bambara mythology, the chi wara is a mythical creature that represents the spirit of agriculture and fertility. The chi wara is half antelope and half aardvark, and is said to have taught the Bamana people how to farm.
