The piece been … Read more A family heirloom, brought directly from Java Indonesia Circa (1920-1970) at the height of East Asian craftsmanship. The piece been in my family for two generations. A magnificent one of a kind piece of that size. Carved from solid Asian hardwood (Likely Camphor) featuring rich natural chatoyancy and grain definition. A huge piece stands at 5’6” feet x 3,4” feet wide. Hand-carved with massive two slabs of wood. The piece is very large and very heavy, weighs more than 40LBs. It sits in two wood blocks that is 1’5” thick as massive single-panel, often used as a partition or decorative element. The seen depicts a tiger on the prowl among earthly branches of bamboo, which are essential elements in Asian methodology. The tiger and bamboo represent a balance of powerful forces:
The raw strength and courage of the tiger are complemented by the bending, unbreaking resilience and integrity of the bamboo. The motif can also represent a harmonious society guided by strong and discerning leadership, as the tiger is one of the few animals able to move through dense bamboo thickets. It’s definitely an aesthetically pleasing piece that speaks to the mastery and artistry of the workmanship.
The panel is intact with some minor cracks in the wood typical of aging but nothing that compromises the integrity of the piece. See less
