A finely crafted antique Chinese Yixing Zisha (purple clay) lidded jar, traditionally used as a cricket jar or tea caddy. This vessel is decorated with incised scholar and immortal figures framed by vertical panels of stylized script. The warm, unglazed clay shows traces of age and use, with a rich dark patina to the exterior and natural reddish tones visible beneath.
The base and lid both bear an apocryphal Qianlong reign mark (1736–1795), a common honorific mark used in the late Qing and Republic periods to pay homage to earlier imperial craftsmanship.
Yixing clay was prized for both scholar’s objects (including cricket jars) and for tea storage, as its porous nature helps regulate humidity. Whether originally intended as a cricket jar, incense holder, or tea caddy, this piece reflects the artistry of the Yixing kilns and the scholar’s studio tradition.
Condition: Expected wear consistent with age; surface marks and minor nicks from use, particularly around the lid and edges.
This is a versatile and collectible example of Chinese Zisha ware, perfect for display in an Asian art collection or for use as a decorative storage jar.
