It is hand made using the lost wax technique, making each piece a one-of-a-kind. The Benin Kingdom was founded in 1300 by the son of an Ife king, and achieved its pinnacle in the 15th/16th centuries. Portuguese traders living on the coast likely introduced some of the metalworking techniques in Benin at that time.
