An excellent reproduction of Kitagawa Utamaro woodblock print Yamamba And Kintaro, Drinking A Cup. One of the original woodblocks by the famous Japanese artist of the Edo period is located at Tokyo National Museum. Published in Japan in 1980s. Heavy paper, copy in Japanese and English on the back. Superb quality. Comes from 50 y.o. collection of Asian Art in Japan. Excellent condition, never framed, like new. Japan, 1980s.
Yamamba (Yamanba, Yamaubo) is a Japanese Folklore character, a young woman in her 20th that was singing songs with her beautiful voice while washing her long black hair. And when a hunter tried to shoot her, Yamamba could repel the bullet with her hands. In this artwork Yamamba is holding Kintaro on her arms. Kintaro is another Japanese Folklore character, Golden Boy, with superhuman strength.
