William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle, was a Royalist living in exile in Belgium, where he opened a riding school. This woodcut engraving, made after a design by Abraham van Diepenbeeck, depicts one of the stages Cavendish and his assistant Captain Mazin employed in training horses in complicated maneuvers. It is one of four framed engravings from this volume that we are currently selling. Measuring 21" x 18 3/4" overall with an image size of 14" x 12", it is framed in wood and in very good condition with age toning commensurate with age and nicks and staining to the outer edges of the page, as pictured.
