The iconic RAR chair - Rocking (R) Arm (A) Chair on Rod (R) Base - was designed by Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller in 1950 and launched as one of the original 5 base options for the new fiberglass chair model. The original RAR has remained a classic and highly-sought after design to this day. This original vintage RAR chair dates from 1959 and features a classic molded fiberglass seat in Elephant Hide Grey with a black oxide base. Original shock mounts with one new to-spec screw. Original Herman Miller patent label with date stamp Jan 1959.
The RAR was originally marketed by Herman Miller as a "fitting companion to the famous molded plywood chairs... these new armchairs of molded Zenaloy, a plastic reinforced with fiberglass that is pleasant to the touch, light, stain-resistant, washable and virtually indestructible. The seat shell is skillfully molded to provide exceptional comfort with the waterfall seat edge reducing pressure on thighs. The rubber shock mounts joining shell and base permit the chair to flex slightly with changes in position."
