An excellent graduation gift for your new lawyer in the family and a rare opportunity to own part of KU history. This architecturally Classical bookshelf is from the University of Kansas, late 1800s, Wheat Law Library, the largest law library in the state of Kansas. It was a part of old Green Hall and was given to my very bookish husband, Thomas Kellogg, after the Law Library moved to it's new building. Jimmy Green’s statue nodded in approval.
This beautifully made, incredibly solid bookshelf had been painted white at some point in the past, and perhaps once before that as an undercoat? of light blue paint appears on the inside top of one end. It has heavy metal straps attached to the back for hanging or stability though it is heavy on a wide base and does not feel as if it would be easily tipped over. The wood shows its natural beauty on the unpainted side. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is.
Overall, this is in very good condition with the only real loss being a bit of paint here and there and a small area of the wood (painted over) near the left front bottom lip. Note that both of the four diamond cut decorations on both sides of the the top re halved for unknown reasons.
81 ½ inches long
51 ½ inches high at tallest point -column in front
15 ¼ inches deep at widest point which is including the top decoration
13 inches deep overall and base
It will take at least 4 lawyers and a good team of horses to move it!
