Washington: U.S. Coast Survey, 1853 [but later]. Photographic facsimile map and chart (MC), 9 panel fold, adhered to backing board, framed under glass, double matted, features nautical region (NR) chart of the San Francisco (SF) Bay, faint foxing of NW NR, SF illustrated in hand coloured detail; streets, wharves, reservoirs, buildings (various locations identified; e.g. Portsmouth Square), hardware fastened at rear with (2) bumpers at bottom corners. Vodges, “No. 627” appears atop border of 1853 first edition, absent from this state. Per the Annual Report of the Survey for 1853, the state of the MC reflects characteristics as issued and published (litho) with the addition of more notes regarding tides (upper left) and issued, engraved on thin paper, as noted in the collection of charts published by the survey in 1854. (p. 253) Not examined out of frame. Very good.
Measures: 27 x 35.75 x 1 overall, 19 x 27 sight, 18.75 x 26.5 MC, inches. Scale 1: 10,000.
"A.D. (Alexander Dallas) Bache was a great grandson of Benjamin Franklin. Bach joined the U.S. Coast Survey in 1843. Bache was best known for his outstanding administrative abilities and remarkable vision; e.g. He assigned his Coast Survey topographers and hydrographers to the Union Army and Navy and increased four-fold the production of maps and charts."
