Edward Hopper (1882-1967) is now accepted as one of the greatest and most challenging of twentieth-century American artists. Challenging, because his best works force viewers to think in ways that most conventionally
"attractive"
paintings do not. And challenging, as well, because the feelings that inform his work are at once powerfully conveyed and ambiguous.
Many of his paintings —works such as Nighthawks, New York Movies, Gas and Early Sunday Morning-have been hailed by critics as monumental displays of psychological insight and social criti-cism, distillations of the essential lonli-ness, alienation and boredom that permeate so much of mid-twentieth-century American life. "Posterity," said fellow artist Charles Burchfield, "will be able to learn more about our life through looking at Hopper's work than from all the social schools,
political comments or
screaming headlines of the present."
Yet however clearly others may have thought they understood the "messages" in Hopper's work, the artist, for the most part, denied that they were there at all. He claimed that the most he ever wanted to do was to "paint sunlight on the side of a house" and to make "the most exact transcription possible of my most intimate impressions of nature." Was Hopper's assessment of his work altogether candid? Or, even if it was, how well did he really understand his own feelings? How well, for that matter, did he understand his own strange and reclusive personality and the extent to which it may have been reflected in his work?
In Edward Hopper noted writer Sherry Marker explores these questions while sketching in the details of the artist's personal and professional life and providing insightful introductions to the nearly 70 full-color reproductions of Hopper paintings that form the heart of this sumptuous volume.
