WILLIS SEAVER ADAMS AMERICAN ARTIST • 1844-1921 - A Retrospective of his life and works.
Obl. 8vo, stiff stapled wrappers. 64 pp, 44 illustrations and photographs, checklist of known works, exhibition list, bibliography. The text by Roger Black is titled "Willis Seaver Adams / Retrospection. The exhibition at the Hilson Gallery…and the catalogue written by The American Studies Group, comprised of students at Deerfield Academy.
For the second time in as many
years, the American Studies Group has been given the opportunity to publish an art catalogue, and I am grateful for the continued interest that so many have had for the program. Without the aid of Dr. S. Arthur Localio the work could never have been done, nor could the exhibition be a success without the Hilson Gallery for Creative Art. It is this type of program that the Hilson family envisioned when they gave the gallery in memory of Mr. Edwin I. Hilson, who was so interested in young people.
In the two years since the formation of the American Studies Group, I have become increasingly convinced of the wide opportunities in this area that are available to our boys, and I cannot help but feel how fortunate we are that the school is located in a town with so much historical back-ground. The village and its inhabitants have always had a deep interest and faith in the education of our young people. Without the support of people interested in the boys, in the school, and in research, this program could never be successful.
The catalogue is entirely the work of the boys and is a fine example of the work of which they are capable. It is with particular pride and pleasure that I extend my congratulations to the American Studies Group.
