Whimsical figurine from renowned Mexican potter Josephina Aguilar of a mermaid with a very expressive octopus. Mermaids are a big part of Mexican folklore, representing the goddess of the sea. Signed.
Aguilar, born in 1945 in Oaxaca and learned her art form from her mother beginning at age 6. She uses red clay to create depictions of everyday village activities, religious and folklore scenes, famous figures and Day of the Dead statues. Aguilar became blind in 2014 and continuing her work using touch. Her work is internationally collected and has been displayed in the Museum of International Folk Art, the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Mexican Museum in San Francisco.
