Item description:
spectacular, beautiful classic sculpture in fine biscuit porcelain, with a blue glazed porcelain base finished with pure gold, depicting the bust of an 18th-century lady wearing a hat with flowers. Made by the famous french manufacturer sevrès, signed under the base with a blue underglaze mark used in the 18th century. Beautiful, evident antique patina throughout the sculpture. Very high plastic quality, perfect execution of the hair, drapery, eyes, mouth, and fabulous hat, with many small roses made by hand one by one, with a beautiful bow on the side. This bust, although small in size, is of truly rare quality.
useful information for evaluating the item:
from internet research, we find that biscuit sculptures from the 1700s and 1800s from this manufacturer are offered at auction at very high prices, ranging from €10,000 for those composed of a large figure or a pair of figures, to maximum prices of up to €100,000 for larger and older groups. For biscuit figurines more similar to ours, depicting important figures from the 1700s, but small busts like ours, prices range from a minimum of €500 to peaks of around €1,500-2,000 as asking prices or auction prices.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
the first sevrès mark consists of two capital ls in italics facing each other, followed by a dot between the two ls until 1752. In 1753, a capital a appeared inside the two ls, followed by a b for 1754, and so on until z for 1777 (the letters w and x were not used). After that, the letter doubled, so we have a double aa for 1778 and a double bb for 1779, as on our bustier. In the last photo, we have included the sevrès letter marking system.
