Description of the object:
Extremely rare small glazed terracotta jug or milk jug, anthropomorphic in shape, depicting the bust of a man with a beard, pipe, and hat, dating back to the early 19th century. The jug is unsigned, but its style clearly indicates that it was made by the English manufacturers Royal Doulton or Minton, dating back to around 1820-1830. The patina covering the object is also excellent, confirming our dating.
Final considerations on the object:
The artistic quality of the jug is very high; note the beauty of the man's face, depicted in minute detail. The decoration is also of the highest standard, with fabulous chiaroscuro on the face and even a blush on the cheeks. We believe this small jug to be one of the very first anthropomorphic pieces made by this English manufacturer, which then began a tradition of producing the anthropomorphic mugs and jugs that everyone is familiar with. However, this small jug is much older than the much larger ones usually found for sale. The material is also different: it is made of glazed terracotta, while the others are made of slipware or soft porcelain.
