description of the item:
pair of polychrome glazed ceramic bookends depicting a pair of children sitting in full art deco style, signed under the base with the w. Goebel manufacturer's mark in green, germany. The pair dates back to the early decades of the 20th century, has an excellent patina, especially under the base, and is signed with both a green mark and an incised mark under the base of one of the two sculptures, and with a catalog number and decoration incised under the base of the other sculpture. The pair is made with bright colors and stylized subjects. Note the bow tie and the child's delightful straw hat, as well as the polka dot shirt and the girl's beautiful hat: all elements in clear art deco style.
useful information for evaluating the item:
from an internet search, we found that there are many rather simple and small goebel sculptures on sale for between €40-50 and €150. But the less ordinary sculptures, in art deco style and more similar to our pair, have much higher prices, ranging from a minimum of €150-200 for the smaller ones, consisting of a single figure, to €400-500 for the larger ones or pairs like ours. Furthermore, in our opinion, our pair is much more beautiful and has a more distinctive and original decoration than most of the most beautiful ones we have found at auction or on various online platforms selling art and antiques.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
the goebel factory was founded in germany in 1871, and the manufacturer has used numerous trademarks throughout its long artistic production. In the last photo, we have included some historical notes about the manufacturer and the numerous trademarks used. It should be noted that ours is one of the first trademarks used, so the sculptures can be dated to the early years of the manufacturer's foundation. This piece has an attribution mark,
