The chest has 9 drawers with a 5 over 4 layout and the lower 4 drawers graduate in size. The chest has a clean aesthetic with a finely formed crown and tall bracket base with scrolled out sides. The drawers are constructed with hand cut dovetails and hand chamfered bottoms and another dovetail set can be seen in our photo of the bottom of the chest. Like most Pennsylvania case furniture, the chest has a full series of dust boards between each drawer that can be seen in our photo with all the drawers removed. The chest is in wonderful condition with our only notes being a small repair to the upper left-hand corner of the top left drawer and a stable age split on the right side that’s not at any risk of expanding. With respect to Sack's good, better, best grading system we’d place this as a “better” example. The craftsmanship and execution of the design is exceptionally well done but on a “best” example you’d hope to find some extra embellishments like carved columns or a more ambitious design to the feet. Pennsylvania collectors tend to favor ogee feet and flared French feet but we actually really do like this design, especially the spurs and protruding lobes near the bottom of the feet. The front spurs are slightly rounded out but that’s not uncommon on these roughly 250 year old chests. The drawers are nice and clean & free of odors and this chest can hold a considerable wardrobe. The chest of drawers measures 42 1/4” wide (40” at base) x 23 1/2” deep (22 1/4” at base) x 60” tall. See less
