This beautiful reproduction is drawn from the original educational botanical charts by Hermann Zippel and Carl Bollmann, who were responsible for the publication of a number of series of botanical educational charts between 1876 and 1899 in Germany. The charts depicted crop plants unknown at the time in most of Europe (this chart outlines the American agave and "real pineapple"). The charts were published in four editions by Friedrich Vieweg & Sohn, of Braunschweig and appeared in three series, this "Auslandische Kulturpflanzen in farbigen Wandtafeln," being the final of the three. Specimens for the charts were obtained from the Leipzig Botanical Garden and from herbaria. Anna Laurent has published a book on these, The Botanical Wallchart: Art from the Golden Age of Scientific Discovery.
This canvas measures 74cm x 95cm; 31.5" x 38.5" includes the measurement of the wooden dowels.
