additional information:
the small table 326/t, designed by gustav siegel in 1899 for the renowned furniture manufacturer jacob & josef kohn, is an outstanding example of the aesthetics of the vienna secession and the innovative use of bentwood technology. The table was presented at the world exhibition in paris in 1900. Gustav siegel received the gold medal for his work at this exhibition, a recognition of his visionary creative power.
at the turn of the century, siegel was a talented student of prof. Josef hoffmann at the vienna school of applied arts, one of the leading institutions for the combination of art and crafts. Hoffmann recognized his student's potential early on and recommended him for the position as chief designer at jacob & josef kohns, a company that became known for its mastery of the bentwood process and its collaboration with avant-garde artists.
the small table 326/t embodies the principles of viennese modernism: a simple, functional design language that impresses with elegantly curved lines and a reduction to the essentials. In order to underline the close collaboration between student and teacher, the glass top of the table was lined with a fabric that was designed by prof. Hoffmann in 1909 and manufactured by the backhausen company. It is the model “diana - mc939b05”. The fusion of the works of student and teacher exemplifies the spirit of the viennese arts and crafts scene around 1900. This piece has an attribution mark,
