To the Chinese family, the first born son, is the greatest wish of all. For those whose wish has not yet been fulfilled, then and now, will collect any emblem of symbol that might bring them their wish. The most popular symbol is Guanyin - the giver of children. This antique basket is decorated in this theme, the ethereal Guanyin holding the baby boy, standing on the lotus, with flying scarves and garments. The painter's skill reflected a serene and spiritual artistry, making this basket a true treasure for those wishing for a son.
In addition to the elaborate cover, the basket itself is a fine example of exquisite basketry. The construction used miniscule bamboo strips woven in the tightest pattern to form the sides of the basket. The handle is attached to the sides with fancy decorations on each side, a raised carving of flowers on a vase and highlighted in gold. Using black lacquer and gold where appropriate. The basket is a fine example of the artistry of the basket weavers from the Treaty Port of Fuzhou during the China Trade period of the 19th/20th century.
Please note most Chinese baskets are not dated. However, a cyclical date of ding mao was on the inscription. According to the 60 year cyclical date, ding mao could be 1867 or 1927. The later date is probably the correct date.
