What Is a Netsuke?
A netsuke is a small, finely carved toggle or ornament that originated in Japan during the Edo period (1603–1868). Traditionally, netsuke were used as functional pieces to secure small containers, such as inro (medicine or accessory cases), to the sash of a kimono. Over time, these miniature carvings evolved into intricate works of art, often depicting animals, mythical creatures, or cultural symbols.
About the Shachihoko:
The shachihoko is a mythical creature in Japanese culture with the body of a carp and the head of a dragon. It is often associated with protection against fire and is frequently seen in Japanese architecture, particularly as roof ornaments. In this piece, the dragon carps are depicted holding a pearl, a symbol of wisdom, prosperity, and strength in East Asian art.
This signed netsuke is not only a functional artifact of Japanese tradition but also a collectible piece of art, perfect for admirers of Japanese culture or collectors of finely detailed carvings.
