About the artwork: From the Golden Age of China, this hand-painted porcelain ceramic charger depicts a party of warriors on horseback carrying swords and shields, leading the way through a mountain pass for standard-bearing nobles. The highly detailed scene is painted on a pale-yellow background and surrounded by a blue geometric rim.
On the underside, the charger bears the mark of Qianlong. The Qianlong emperor’s long 60-year reign (1736-1795) was a particularly fascinating time in China’s history. During his reign, China was the wealthiest and most populous nation in the world. Qianlong was able to preserve and foster his Manchu warrior-huntsman traditions whilst adopting the Confucian principles of political and cultural leadership. This large piece is a detailed and delightful collectible.
