Found in the pantry of a home built in 1882 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, this antique enamelware pail has its original label referring to it as "French Gray Enamel Ware" with a patent date of June 14, 1904.
The antique bucket would make an attractive cachepot decor accent in a rustic cabin or modern farmhouse kitchen.
The small vintage enamelware bucket is in good condition for its age, with some enamel loss around the bottom edge as shown in the photographs.
Born in 1853, Henry C. Milligan received a patent for his process of enameling steel ware on June 14, 1904. His obituary in the March 9, 1940 edition of The New York Times refers to him as a "Pioneer of Enamel." He worked for Lalance & Grosjean Manufacturing Company, and founded the Newark Stamping Company, Crescent Enamel Company, and the Republic Stamping and Enameling Company.
