Léon Pointu (1879-1942) was a renowned French ceramist, son of Jean Pointu (1843-1925), also a renowned ceramist. Born in Fontainebleau, where his father owned a ceramic factory, Léon grew up in an environment dedicated to ceramic production. He trained alongside his father, developing his skills from a young age.
In 1906, the Pointu family settled in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, a dynamic region artistically, notably thanks to the influence of Jean Carriès. Léon became his father's partner after his military service, and their workshop was distinguished by stoneware creations with refined shapes and innovative enamels.
After his father retired around 1921 and died in 1925, Léon developed his own style. His works are characterized by larger shapes, bright colors and innovations such as thick drips imitating the texture of snakeskin. In the 1930s, under the influence of Lucien Brisdoux, he introduced reticulated or ocellated cloud motifs, embellished with drips of gold or platinum on dark or bluish backgrounds.
Léon Pointu is recognized for his mastery of enamels and his quest for perfection, meticulously selecting his materials and techniques. His work has contributed to the evolution of French ceramics, in particular by integrating Japanese influences and developing innovative techniques.
After his death in 1942, its production was continued by his wife and son until 1947, the year when the workshop was transformed by his son Michel Pointu into an industrial tableware company, Arts-Ceram. This piece has an attribution mark,
