Item description:
wonderful hard porcelain sculpture, polychrome, entirely decorated by hand, depicting a couple of children in period clothing, glazed with a third firing and signed under the base with an antique mark depicting a crowned "n" in blue. The sculpture, in full art nouveau style, can be dated to the late 19th century, around 1880, and the evident patina covering the object confirms this dating. Note, for example, the encrusted and hardened dirt stains under the base. Under the base there is also an antique wax stamp, as was only the case for the most antique and valuable porcelain belonging to some important collections.
useful information for evaluating the object:
a quick internet search shows that ernst bohne & sohne porcelain is offered for sale on the best online art and antiques websites, ranging from a minimum of €150-200 for the smallest and simplest pieces to prices exceeding €1,500-2,000 for larger pieces with more characters and more complex workmanship. For pairs such as ours, in terms of beauty, size, and period, prices range from a minimum of €300 to over €500.
final thoughts on the object:
the porcelain used to make the sculpture is solid, heavy, and rich in kaolin. In our opinion, this sculpture is particularly beautiful due to the beauty of the two children's faces, which are classically german in style, and the floral decorations on their clothes, which are entirely hand-painted by the decorator, typical of meissen sculptures from the 1700s, which ernest bohne has always been inspired by. Both the fruit basket, decorated in bright, vivid colors, and the flower basket are beautiful, as is the pose of the children, with her drying her tears with the corner of her apron and him trying to comfort her by offering her an apple. Delightful!
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
the sculpture is not italian, as one might think, and has nothing to do with capodimonte, which is easy to deduce from the style and faces of the two children. But is instead a german sculpture and the mark is that used in the late 19th century by the famous ernst bohne & sohne factory in thuringia, internationally renowned for the quality and beauty of its porcelain creations, which was later absorbed by rudolstadt, another famous german manufacturer. In the last photos, we have included historical notes on the manufacturer and photos of some of the numerous marks used. The manufacturer was founded in 1854 and remained active until 1945, when it was definitively absorbed by rudolstadt. The marks with a crowned n are among the first and oldest used, such as the one under the sculpture shown here.
