A Stunning Quality 19th Century, Victorian, Burr Walnut Kidney Shaped Writing Table, Having Attractive Old Leather, with Blind Tooled Decoration, Inset To Crossbanded Top, Over Highly Figured Shaped Frieze, with One Drawer, Raised On Elegant Bold Cabriole Legs with Exceptional Original Gilt Bronze Brass Mounted Decoration.
Stamped To Drawer - Gillow & Co, 3576.
This fabulous quality table absolutely oozes elegance, class and sophistication, which of course is no less than one would expect from the well known, highly respected cabinet making firm of Gillow & Co. All of the timbers used in its construction are of the highest possible grade and they have been expertly put together by skilled cabinetmakers. It is also worth noting that the metal decoration is very, very good indeed.
A useful size for its original purpose as a writing table, or alternatively just as a small centre or occasional type table in any room this table would be a great addition to any environment. All of the gilt bronze decoration appears to be original and there has been very few repairs or replacements, apart from the leather top, which is a high quality old replacement and remains in good condition. That said should one wish then the leather could very easily and relatively inexpensively be replaced.
As with all items which we offer for sale this Kidney Shaped Table has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by highly skilled, professionaly trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale, ensuring that it is ready for immediate placement within the home.
The table is of course stamped Gillow & Co 3576, which suggests that it was made around 1875 based on the firms records and serial number system which was introduced around the mid 19th century, but not always used by all makers on all furniture. Gillows of Lancaster are of course one of the most famous English cabinet making firms of all time, well known and respected for their quite exceptional quality output from the late 18th century all the way through to the early 20th century.
