This is a black felt pen wipe decorated with a cluster of millinery berries and leaves. Dimensions are 3” by 3.5”. Excellent condition. They were used to clean the nib of a pen by wiping the pen between the layers of felt.
Pen wipes were used by school children and adults in the 19th century. They were created in a variety of designs that went from simple to highly ornate and were often handmade with patterns available in magazines. Businesses and organizations often used them for advertising. These utilitarian items were common in the 19th century however they are relatively hard-to-find items today and highly collectible.
