It is a handmade pen wiper or dauber. Made of black wool broadcloth in the design of a stuffed glove, it is embroidered in multicolor silk thread and has a dark blue lining. The embroidery is worn and there is evidence of ink on the blue lining. Dimensions are 5” long, 2.5” wide at its widest point and about 1” deep. This wipe came from the family of he original owner with an oral history of having been acquired at the Chicago Columbian Exposition in 1893. Pen wipes were often used by organizations to advertise. Their primary purpose was to clean ink from the nib of a pen. See less
