Francesca Johnson, forty-five and once a young war bride from Italy, lives in the hills of south Iowa with flickering memories of her girlhood dreams. ROBERT JAMES WALLER is a writer, pho-tographer, and musician. He is the author of two books of essays, Just Beyond the Firelight and One Good Road Is Enough, both published by Iowa State University Press. A professor of management at the University of Northern lowa, he lives in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
