Decorate an office or study with this antique oil on canvas painting. Created in Italy, and signed by the artist Stefano Novo, the painting is set in a highly decorative frame, with intricate floral and scroll motifs; the subject matter depicts an intimate scene within an opulent interior. The composition features three figures: two cardinals dressed in vivid red robes, and a young woman in modest attire holding a book or document. One cardinal is seated, exuding authority, while the other gestures emphatically toward the woman, suggesting it was time for a toast. The setting includes rich details such as plush drapery, a statue, and classic furnishings, alluding to an ecclesiastical or aristocratic setting. The brushstrokes and warm color palette evoke a 19th century academic painting style while the gilded frame enhances the painting's grandeur and period authenticity. The painting is in excellent condition with rich colors throughout and wonderful carvings in the ornate, high-relief frame. A wonderful addition especially for collectors of ecclesiastical or genre scenes. Listed in the Benezit.
Stefano Novo (1862–1927) was an Italian painter renowned for his works depicting genre scenes and everyday life, often with an emphasis on character and narrative. Born in Cavarzere in 1862, he was a student of P. Molmenti and E. Blaas, and exposed his work in Turin, Florence, Livourne, Venice and Bologna. He was part of a generation of artists influenced by the academic tradition, while also incorporating a vibrant, naturalistic style in his works. His paintings frequently portrayed scenes from 19th-century Venetian and Italian life, including intimate domestic moments, interactions in aristocratic or religious settings, and richly detailed interiors. Novo's work is characterized by its detailed composition, skillful use of light, and expressive depiction of human figures, often capturing subtle emotions and interactions. He was also recognized for his ability to tell a story through his paintings, with each element carefully composed to add to the narrative. His paintings have been exhibited internationally, and his works are now sought after by collectors.
