This pattern was introduced in 1806, which helps to date this specific pair to c. 1806-1820.

There were several variations of the Spode “Greek” patterns, many of which were taken directly from popular prints or etchings of the time (pre copyright laws!). The central motif of the chestnut basket is one such example; taken from Outlines from the figures and compositions upon the Greek, Roman, and Etruscan vases of the late Sir William Hamilton : with engraved borders - Published 1804, which attributes the scene to a depiction of a festival to Venus.

In the early 1800s, Spode pieces were not always stamped or marked with the Spode name or insignia. As was more common in this era, the bottom of the basket is marked with an underglazed blue Spode workman's mark.

This is a rare, beautifully intricate pattern, made even more special to have the matching pair intact and in superb condition. This chestnut basket and tray makes a lovely addition to any collection or the perfect conversation piece! See less
