This pair of parrot prints are from a high quality limited re-edition of Histoire Naturelle Des Perroquets (1963) on laid paper with plate impression marks visible all the way around just like the originals printed in Paris between 1801 and 1805. Depicted are the “Lori à collier” and “Le Perroquet à calotte bleue,” both vividly colored. Jacques Barraband (1767-1809) was the artist behind the original publication’s fine images, his skills honed by exposure as a young man to tapestry design, later training and working as a porcelain painter of exquisite flowers, etc. at the Sèvres manufactory near Paris before focusing on the exacting Natural History subject of birds. Wonderful quality multi-layered matting with marbleized paper and hand drawn gilt and colored filage surrounds complement the good gilt wood frames around the prints. Very good condition, the red parrot print with very slight sporadic toning to the paper.
