Jean Baptiste Audebert 18th century hand color print of a Oustiti Monkey
Beautiful antique mirrored frame size 20 x 26"
Paris 1797-1800. Color intaglio print with added handcolor, image approximately 14 1/2 x 9 inches on sheet size 20 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches. Light scattered foxing, faint toning to edges; otherwise very good condition. An exquisitely detailed image of l' Oustiti buff Monkey. From Histoire Naturelle des Singes et des Makis by Jean Baptiste Audebert, published between 1797-1800. This was Audebert's first individually issued publication, and he lavished attention on the plates which were printed with a color printing method he apparently devised, incorporating stipple engraving. S. Peter Dance notes in "The Art of Natural History" that "zoological art in France an overall uniformity and distinction that was not equalled elsewhere."
