Once … Read more Here's a real antique, in appropriate antique condition, owing to its approximately hundred years of age (an educated guess). Once upon a time, it was electrified; it has tiny holes for passing thin French wire through the base, out the shaft, and into the candle-holders. There's one hole near the bottom of the base where all the wires would exit. The wires would travel along the bottom of each arm, then go up through the curlicue at the end of each arm, into the (electric) candle holder. In other words, it could be re-electrified.. For simplicity's sake, and extra ambiance, use real candles, just like they did two hundred years ago! The lamp has many handmade aspects, you'll see evidence of this once you have it in your possession -- filing marks on the arms near the curlicues, for instance. It has vestiges of its original gilt finish, and there's enough of that left to give it the kind of antique glow that we like to see. The metal shade has one so-so side, with some scratches and blemishes, and one good side. The paint on the shade is crazed throughout, an indication of its advanced age. The shade travels along the squared rod that holds it, loosened or tightened by a twist of the arrow above it.
