filiberto petiti was an italian painter and engraver.
count filiberto avogadro di collobiano, his godfather, introduced him to the painter felice cerruti beauduc who taught him his first drawing and watercolour techniques. Moved to florence in 1867, when the capital left turin, he met niccolò barabino, stefano ussi, telemaco signorini and joined the macchiaioli group, although he retained a taste for lyrical and romantic landscapes, devoid of references to real life. In 1865, he caught the public's attention at the 1873 florentine exhibition of fine arts, when he presented ‘il renaiuolo’, ‘sorrisi d'autunno’ and ‘rive di un torrente’.
in 1874, he left florence for rome. Here he met the piedmontese painter carlo pittara, a follower of the ‘rivara school’, which tended to go beyond academic beauty through a cautious verism. Petiti was enchanted by roman landscape painters, in particular the atmospheric effects of achille vertunni and the vast open spaces of nino costa. He painted country views, lonely places, cloudy skies and marshes, and autumn woods, observing everything from life, but retaining memories of the french barbizon school, borrowed from his early piedmontese experiences. In 1875, he exhibited the drawing ‘return from fishing’ and the oil painting ‘november in the surroundings of florence’ with the società degli amatori e cultori delle belle arti in rome. In february 1878, he joined the association of roman watercolourists, opening his palette to clearer and brighter colours
in 1881, petiti participated in the national exhibition of fine arts in milan with ‘visit to the estate - roman countryside’, which was purchased by the milan gallery of modern art. With the acquarellisti di roma he exhibited ‘la quiete’ and ‘una giornata di vento’. In 1883 he presented ‘morning at marino’ at brera and at the international exhibition in rome the watercolours ‘horses at the drink’, ‘after the storm’ and ‘winter sun’. In turin, with the amatori e cultori (amateurs and connoisseurs) in 1885, he presented ‘sulla riviera’, ‘i bagni pubblici a levanto’.
he became friends with the painter cesare tallone, who painted a portrait of him. Queen margherita of savoy visited his studio three times. At the 1900 universal exhibition in paris, petiti presented ‘maccarese’. In 1901 and 1903 he was present at the venice biennale. In 1907 he joined the xxv group in the roman countryside, with the nickname ‘gatto soriano’ (tabby cat). Petiti was also an engraver and his drawings, two branches and some etchings are preserved at the central institute for graphics in rome.
in 1891 his large canvas ‘the last leaves’, painted from life in a forest near marino, was exhibited in berlin and purchased by emperor wilhelm ii for the nationalgalerie. He participated in the 1911 international exhibition of fine arts with ‘dal monte al piano’, and in 1912 exhibited etchings at the amatori e cultori in turin. He was a member of the brera academy and the academy of san luca, which owns his oil painting ‘in the woods’ and the ‘self-portrait’ of 1915. Petiti exhibited at the roman biennials of 1921 and 1923, and in 1922 at the ‘xxv della campagna romana’ collective exhibition.
