The hardcover book with embossed spine titles and dust jacket is published by Phaidon Press Limited London, England. Printed in Germany in 1973, authored by Friedhelm W. Fischer and translated by P.S. Falla. It features a monograph survey of the artworks of the german Expressionist artist Max Beckmann.

Max Beckmann ( 1884 - 1950 ) the German born painter, printmaker, sculptor, and writer is commonly defined as an Expressionist, although he rejected both the term and the movement. In the 1920's he was associated with the " New Objectivity " an outgrowth of Expressionism that opposed its introverted emotions. His work is regarded as one of the most original achievements of the Modern spirit. He is attributed to creating some of the most personal and authentic versions of Modernist paintings of The 20th Century.

The author of this book, who is lecturer in art history at The University of Karlsruhe, has made use of his researches to illuminate Beckmann's work, and also striven to establish as close a link as possible between the artwork, the viewer and the artist's personality. In this way developments in the painter's life become relevant, and the individuality of his style is made clearer as each artwork is discussed. These interpretations give the reader insight into an unusual and uniquely inspired artistic personality, and how passionate are the sympathies and attitudes expressed in his paintings.
