Artist Biography
Christopher Brown is a contemporary American painter. Known for his affinity for repeated forms within a single canvas, the artist often employs unusual perspective and dramatic cropping. His figural—yet by no means realist—paintings often feature abstractions and culturally significant images culled from television, magazines, and films. Brown has said of his work, “The subject matter comes and goes, but all the paintings deal with issues that are purely painterly. Like issues of light and movement and depiction.” With this, narratives in Brown’s paintings remain somewhat of a mystery, as he has employed a wide array of subject matter to explore illusionistic space and paint as a substance. Born in 1951 in Camp Lejeune, a Marine Corps base in North Carolina, he went on to study under Wayne Thiebaud and Manuel Neri at the University of California in Davis. He has served as a professor at the University of California at Berkeley and at the California College of the Arts in Oakland. Brown’s works are in the collections of the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.
