Description of the item:
Wonderful figurine depicting a child fisherman, made of fine white hard-paste porcelain, signed under the base with a blue underglaze mark, with the letter "N" crowned with a five-pointed crown. The sculpture dates back to the first half of the 19th century, 1800-1850. It was made by the Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea in Naples until 1806, then from that date until 1834, ownership of the factory passed to Ginori di Doccia. The sculpture could be from either factory, but they are practically the same. The artistic quality of the sculpture is very high, with remarkable attention to detail. The face is slightly tilted, as we are at the beginning of the 1800s, but the influence of the Rococo style of the 1700s was still strong. Finally, the ceramic mixture is excellent, very hard and rich in kaolin. The mark is absolutely antique and 100% authentic, with a beautiful patina on the unglazed edge under the base, testifying to the age of the piece. This is also demonstrated by the holes on the back, which were only made in the most antique porcelain as a means of releasing heat to prevent them from bursting during firing, as they were made of solid porcelain, not hollow like the more modern ones.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Internet research shows that polychrome hard porcelain figurines depicting children from the Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea are auctioned for a minimum of €1,000-1,200 for the smallest ones, even though they are larger than ours and polychrome, up to over €2,000 for slightly larger ones consisting of two characters.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
In 1771, Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, King of Naples and the Two Sicilies, founded a porcelain factory in Villa Portici, Naples, which was transferred to the royal palace in 1773 to produce classical sculptures with an antique flavor, until 1806 when production was interrupted by the French occupation. The property then passed to the Florentine factory in Doccia, until it closed permanently in 1834. Below, we have provided some historical notes on the Naples factory with some of its marks. Ours should correspond to number 8.
