Antique storage box for a Japanese scroll, also known as a Kakejiku-Bako (掛軸箱).
Dimensions: height 9 cm, width 16 cm, length 86 cm.
This elegant, elongated wooden box is crafted from lightweight paulownia wood and adorned with exquisite hand-painted Japanese calligraphy.
The calligraphic inscriptions suggest that this storage box dates back to 1825, during the Bunsei period.
Not only is this box a beautiful decorative piece, but it can also serve a functional purpose as a unique storage solution in a studio or office. Use it, for instance, to store pencils, art supplies, brushes, or sewing tools.
Originally, such boxes were used to store Japanese scrolls, protecting them from the passage of time and environmental damage. The inscriptions on this Kakejiku-Bako indicate that it originates from a Buddhist temple, adding to its historical and spiritual significance.
