Item description:
Wonderful two-handled majolica ceramic vase, entirely hand-modeled on a potter's wheel with a couple depicted on one side and a shepherd with a donkey on the other, made by Matteo di Lieto, signed "M. Di Lieto" under the base with place of origin "Italy." Globular vase, bowl-shaped with a truncated conical neck, very similar to Rometti's Art Deco vases. The handles are also in full Art Deco style, made with a ceramic strip forming three delightful semicircles one above the other. The decorations are classic Vietri designs from the German period, echoing many elements of the greatest Vietri masters such as Studemann, Dolker and, in this case, considering the faces and style of the subjects portrayed, Irene Kowaliska.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
From an internet search, we found that Matteo di Lieto ceramics are offered on various online art and antiques sales sites for a minimum of €100-150 for smaller pieces up to €450-500 for large, beautiful vases like ours, which in our opinion is by far the most beautiful one currently on sale. Consider that Pamono is offering a simple tray decorated with fish, very similar in workmanship to our vase, for as much as €420!
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Matteo di Lieto is a Vietri ceramist born in 1920 who works in Amalfi, with his own workshop called "Arte Ceramica Amalfi," which he opened in the early 1940s.
