Description of the item:
Beautiful polychrome, glazed, and enamelled ceramic sculpture depicting Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the famous composer of the 1700s, made by the important Austrian manufacturer Goldscheider, signed and numbered on the back with an embossed mark. The base also bears the artist's signature, "Perigot," in cursive. The sculpture is made in full Art Nouveau style and can be dated to between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. The polychromy is very vivid. Note the beauty of the bodice, entirely decorated by hand with floral motifs, and the extremely expressive pose of the subject, intent on reading the music he has just written. Finally, the rich third-fire glazing is delightful, giving the object a particularly pleasant sense of evanescence. This sculpture is extremely rare to find, very distinctive, and highly sought after in the art market.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Internet research shows that Goldscheider was one of the most important European manufacturers in the late 1800s and early 1900s, boasting numerous auction results. The four highest prices we found, which refer to terracotta sculptures depicting Orientalist subjects, range from €11,000 to €23,000 plus auction fees of 25-30%, to give a general idea of the importance of this manufacturer. In particular, sculptures similar to ours in Art Nouveau style are offered at a minimum of €400-500 for the smallest ones, up to a maximum of €1,500-1,800 for the largest ones. We then found the same sculpture we have on offer on a major online art and antiques sales platform for €1,343.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
The Austrian manufacturer Goldscheider was founded in 1885 by the famous entrepreneur and artist Friedrich Goldscheider and remained active until 1954. This manufacturer is considered one of the most important European manufacturers in the late 1800s and early 1900s, collaborating with numerous important artists in almost 70 years of activity (such as Lorenzl, Dakon, Knorlein, Meisinger, Goebel, Cherc, Rosè, and Perigot).
