Description of the item:
Beautiful Art Nouveau-style sculpture in cast ceramic, polychrome, glazed and partially vitrified, depicting a loving little girl with a basket and large hat, dressed in 19th-century clothing, made by the important Austrian manufacturer Goldscheider, signed and numbered on the back with an incised mark. The artist's signature, "Lefont," is also stamped in cursive on the base. Featured in the Goldscheider general catalog under number 2920, where the sculpture is attributed to Lefont and dated 1905. Note the striking contrast between the opaque parts and the glazed parts fired at a third firing. The polychromy is also very delicate, giving the object a wonderful evanescence, a real touch of class that makes it diaphanous and soft in color, echoing the Impressionist style of the late 1800s.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Internet research shows that Goldscheider was one of the most important European manufacturers in the late 1800s and early 1900s, boasting numerous auction results. The four highest prices we found, which refer to terracotta sculptures depicting Orientalist subjects, range from €11,000 to €23,000 plus auction fees of 25-30%, to give a general idea of the importance of this manufacturer. In particular, sculptures similar to ours in Art Nouveau style are offered at a minimum of €400-500 for the smallest ones up to a maximum of €1,500-1,800 for the largest ones. Finally, for a little girl on a sled very similar to ours in style and color, more than €2,500 is being asked on 1stDibs.
