Item description:
box with majolica ceramic lid, handmade on a potter's wheel without a mold, glazed with thick, compact glazes, decorated entirely by hand with geometric patterns, lines, and circles created with an airbrush in a futuristic style, and a delightful ring knob. Signed under the base with the manufacturer's incised mark, a c and two squares immediately above it. The vase dates back to the first half of the 20th century, between 1950 and 1960, and was made by the german manufacturer carstens-tönnieshof.
useful information for evaluating the item:
internet research shows that items from this manufacturer are offered for sale at prices ranging from €300-400 for the smallest and simplest vases to €1,500-1,800 for the largest vases with more complex glazing and decoration on the most important online sales platforms for art and antiques.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
in 1892, brothers christian and ernst carstens opened a ceramics factory in brandenburg, east germany. In 1947, the name of the manufacturer changed to carstens-tönnieshof and the factory moved to west germany. After 30 years, the brothers further expanded production by opening factories in austria, australia, and south america, and in 1984 they closed down permanently. The main designers were trude carstens, heinz siery, gerda heuckeroth, dieter peter, helmut scholtis, rudolph christmann, and a. Seide. The first ceramics produced featured simple shapes and colors. More complex designs, processes, and colors were developed by trude (ernst's wife) carstens in the mid-1950s. At the end of the 1950s, shapes and decorations with geometric patterns were also developed, examples of which include the 1958 carmen relief series and the objects created by heinz siery and gerda heuckeroth, some examples of which can be found in the limited series brasilia and manilla.
