Each panel … Read more 19th century Japanese Meiji period six-panel byobu screen depicting 18 of the thirty six immortals of poetry (Sanjurokkasen). Each panel has the portrait of 3 poets.
The poets are from the Asuka, Nara, and Heian periods.
Painted in the Kano school style though executed in the Tosa school manner. The portraits are set in a wood frame with a dramatic gilt background. The paintings have a desirable aged patina with fading, but their beautiful robes still having vivid color. From an estate in Beverly Hills, CA.
