The arhat is a figure of primary importance in Theravada Buddhism but he achieves enlightenment through teaching while a Buddha achieves it by himself. Even if Moggallana is widely mentioned in Mahayana Buddhism, the ideal of the arhat is abandoned in favor of that of bodhisattva, a more altruistic concept.
